Why "Wood Tech"?

Wood Technology, and Why It Covers More Than Just Woodworking.
Introductory blog posts are always fluffy and unhelpful. I will attempt to avoid both. As a part of the up-and-coming generation of career woodworking professionals, I have a college degree and numerous years of experience under my belt in a number of capacities. These include time spent in production cabinetry work, small-shop carpentry work, independent furniture making and furniture repair, and now independent wood technology education.

In the trade world, layman's terms begin to break down very quickly. Adequate terminology is critical in order to communicate necessary information. There is a big difference between a carpenter (home builder), a cabinet maker (production worker), and woodworker (typical hobbyist). The same nomenclature may or may not be used by each, and can sometimes mean different things. Each of these three individuals will have a tolerance of error for their work, but whereas a carpenter might have a huge 1/8", the cabinet maker will regularly go as far down as 1/32", and the hobbyist woodworker will routinely agonize over a few thousandths of an inch.
Application is the foundation of nomenclature. Once it becomes clear that woodworking is only a small portion of a much, much larger trade sector, then the information suddenly becomes available to those who know how to interpret it.
Wood Technology: Utilization of Lumber and its Products
Woodworking as a topic tends to limit itself to information found in the hobbyist's shop. The goal for my blog is to provide information which is useful in a wide range of applications. Especially for any working professional who is interacting with lumber based materials. My focal points will be:
The Wood (Wood Tech): Lumber, its interactions, and how to interact with it
What To Do With It (Design): Sacred Geometry, ergonomics, and historical proportions
You will find a wide range of topics here, but hopefully, each may in some way be helpful.
Speak "friend" and enter.
I find that many times, those trying to enter into the wood working world might be held back by a variety of reasons. Most common seems to be a self-limitation of, "I am not a professional - I can't do a project like that" or perhaps, "I don't have the tools, or the money to buy them. I can't do a project like that." My secondary desire for this blog is to be a friend who can open the door for those trying to get in. I want to provide the information someone needs to be able to finally make that project, to solve the problem they can't figure out on their tool settings, to learn where and how to buy tools more effectively, and even how to start defining their own sense of style and design aesthetic.
So welcome, reader. This is the start of a new endeavor, and hopefully one which will yield fruit on both sides of our conversation. I look forward to seeing it grow, and hope you do as well.
